I have done dozens of trail rides and this was by far the best experience I ever had. Mountain Joe and Marjorie were incredibly hospitable, taking me on a new trail they had just created and tailoring my ride to me. I love horses and they were gracious enough to let me help unsaddle my horse, give them some treats, and answer all of my questions.
Their horses are not just well taken care of, but loved.
The trail itself is unbelievably peaceful and very scenic at points. Besides some grazing cattle and a few deer, we didn’t see another soul the entire ride.
Marjorie and Joe are a very sweet couple and I loved spending time with them.
A great ride with Mountain Joe:
My wife and I were Mountain Joe’s first trail ride of the 2023 season and he was gracious enough to trailer his horses down to the high desert due to the heavy snow at his ranch. We rode over varying terrains and the horses were great.
It was a great ride through beautiful country and Mountain Joe was a fantastic guide.
Melinda Chicago, IL Wonderful kid friendly trail ride Awesome horseback ride! Great with toddlers. Very friendly and hospitable. Would definitely ride again.
The. Entire. Thing. This was one amazing experience from beginning to end. Our ride had to be re-routed due to the presence lingering snow, and loads of it, so Mountain Joe and his wife and partner Marjorie, took just my husband and I for a lovely meander through sagebrush country. The day, the ride, the weather, this couple…all were magical. They made sure we had enough experiences in several different kinds of terrain, after ascertaining our level of equestrian experience (like, none). They selected horses who were gentle and smooth…..it was fantastic to be so high in the air, especially for me, a very short person. To stare over the neck and head of a gorgeous animal….to learn how to use the reins… to try to become some version of being “one with the horse”. Well, I personally never got there but the whole two hours made my vacation, itself a long long time coming,, into a magical realization of a little girl”s dreams. You cannot have it better than this: two people devoted to bringing absolute joy to people and who love their animals and their lives. I feel blessed to have met them and to have ridden with them.
Loved this ride! I have been to Moab half a dozen times, and have tried every horseback riding operation in the area. Finally I found Mountain Joe's! All the other operations are nose to tail one-mile rides (glorified pony rides), or the operators are just going through the motions. But riding with Mountain Joe is heaven! The horses are gorgeous, healthy and well-trained. Joe himself is a pleasure to ride with. He's happy to let you gallop if you want, or take your time. The terrain is beautiful--we were riding through ponderosa pines with snow-capped mountains in the distance. We didn't bump into a soul out there: just trees, birds, and a few wandering cows. And I loved riding his Tennessee Walker, Ringo--what a smooth gait! Organizing the ride was super easy, and the price was great. I'll be back, thanks for such a wonderful ride, Joe!

What a great experience! Joe, Marjorie and our helper guide Tron were friendly and helpful! The horses were beautiful and the views fabulous. We loved every minute. We took our children 6, 8, and 10. The 6 year old was able to ride with me and our daughters had their own horses, which they loved. Thank you for the memories!

CouplesThis is probably the coolest thing I’ve ever done in the mountains, Joe was awesome as an instructor and definitely let the horses guide. It’s such a beautiful scenic ride, and the horses are so tame and nice. I also got to Gallup the horses which was incredible. This was my first time ever riding a horse and was probably one of the best experiences I’ve ever had in my life! DON’T MISS OUT ON THE OPPORTUNITY IF YOUR UP HERE, SO WORTH IT!!!

I took my family of 3 inexperienced riders : 44, 5 & 7 on a 2 hour ride. I can’t gush enough about how wonder the trip was! My 5 year old was able to ride by herself and the perfect horses were chosen for each rider. The views were absolutely amazing! This is the ideal place for families with younger children who want to ride!

Mountain Joe's was a sheer delight! There were 3 adults and 2 youth in our group. MJ was very attentive and mindful of both the riders (mostly who had zero experience) and the horses. He is super flexible and his wife Marjorie is quick to respond despite terrible cell service from all providers. The views in the La Sal Mountains are spectacular and MJ will assure you of a rewarding experience! All of us had a great time and sincerely appreciated MJ's kind nature and hospitality!
We took the two hour adventure ride and saw sights we would never have seen on foot or even an ATV. The view at the turn around was breathtaking. The horses were very easy to ride and responsive to directions. Mountain Joe was knowledgeable of the area and very personable. Overall, it was a great experience! We highly recommend Mountain Joe's Trail Rides.
Mountain Joe's trail ride offered us the breathtaking beauty of the La Sal Mountains. I appreciated this is a completely personalized experience. My 12 year old son and I opted for the 2 hour ride. My son had no riding experience and was initially nervous but Mountain Joe immediately put him at ease and he felt very comfortable handling his horse. Mountain Joe's accommodates any pace (we opted for slow) and the horses are beautiful. This is definitely not a nose to tail ride. It is a must for anyone staying at a Cabin on Wolf Springs Ranch and worth the drive from Moab.
